BoardRoom enters post production phase
After almost two years of filming and interviewing an all-star cast of shapers and surfers, BoardRoom – Legends of Surfboard shaping has been entering the post production stage.
BoardRoom features the greatest legends of modern board shaping. We hear first hand on how they got started, who gave them a break and how they changed surfing history forever. We hear about the transition from balsa to foam , from long board to short board, from California to Hawaii. Get ready for a trip back in time to the beginning of modern day shaping.
“We are so excited to finally put it all together. We have so much good footage, it’s enough to make 5 movies”, says director Davids. The production crew of BoardRoom has shot over 50 hours of footage of the greatest shapers and pioneers of the surf business: Greg Noll, Bing Copeland, Hap Jacobs, Renny Yater, Donald Takayama to name a few. “We got an all star cast that goes back as far as the early days of surfing at the Palos Verde Cove.”
The film features segments on Bob Simmons, Matt Kivlin,Joe Quigg, and takes us to the early days during the transition from balsa to foam. “We were very fortunate to be granted an interview by retired surfboard blank mogul Gordon Clark, probably one of the first interview he gave in two decades. At the same time we got interviews from his biggest competitor in the early days of foam Harold Walker as well as foam pioneer Dave Sweet. The biggest challenge we are facing in the editing process, is to keep it authentic and true to the story. It is amazing how passionate all these shapers are after so many decades in the business”, says editor and producer Robert Jax. “We are taking on a great deal of responsibility in not only making an entertaining movie but also getting the story right to make it a lasting account of surfing history.”
“We knew we were onto something that hasn’t really be done like this before, by the early support we got from the shapers we interviewed, the industry, as well as the surfer who want to revisit the early days of surfing culture. Many shapers were reluctant to agree to an interview at first, as they felt they had done these before but the projects never seem to go anywhere.” director Davids recalls. “It has been a real treat for us over the entire course of production. We have been digging in archives and have seen some amazing photo collections of this period of time and we are very fortunate to feature a lot of them in our movie. Photos from Ron Church, Steve Wilkings, Leroy Grannis, Walter Hoffmann, Ron Stoner as well as many photos from personal collection most of which have never been seen by the public.”
BoardRoom will kick of with a nationwide screening tour with stops along the coast of California as well as the East Coast and Hawaii.
