Garrett McNamara, who made history in Nazaré during ZON’s North Canyon expedition in 2011, winning the Billabong XXL Biggest Wave award and earning a Guinness World Record, returned to Nazaré straight from Hawaii to surf a swell forecast to produce wave heights and conditions that had yet to be experienced in Praia do Norte.
Garrett McNamara makes history again by breaking the current record of the biggest wave ever surfed. The wave came during the two month period of the ZON North Canyon Show 2011, with a height of around 90 feet.
Nazaré makes surf history with the largest waves ever ridden in Portugal. Garrett McNamara’s wave has been entered into the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards 2012, considered the “Oscars” of big wave riding. This is the first time that a wave from Portugal has been entered into the competition.
Three days of perfect swell hit Praia do Norte. Ocean explorer, Garrett McNamara and Floridian, CJ Macias were in the right spot to take full advantage of what Nazaré had to offer. This was the first session with large waves to start this year’s ZON North Canyon Show 2011 exploration.
