WAX Magazine launch

March 12, 2012 | Words By: Howard

In the coming weeks and months a new magazine dedicated to the life of New York surfers will be launched. The publishers wanted us to make you aware and to generate some support for its launch. It looks rad, so we’re happy to help out. Introducing WAX Magazine

A new print publication about surfing, art and culture in and around New York City is launching in May 2012. The publication, conceived of and edited by graphic designers David Yun and Zak Klauck, and writer Aeriel Brown, will feature art work by prominent New York artists who share a connection through the surfing community.

The idea is to make a publication that speaks directly to the surf set found here, in New York, and in the future, to other urban surf spots,” says David Yun. “At our local breaks, we find the people we meet are artists, architects, and writers — often the leaders in their fields. We wanted to create a publication that tells their stories and opens up a rich dialogue amongst urban surfers.

There seemed to be a huge hole in what was offered in terms of print magazines for surfers out there, especially for East Coast surfers,” says Aeriel Brown. “A lot of what’s out there speaks to a younger, mostly male audience. We kept looking for something that was more inclusive with a broader scope — something that took into consideration not only the wide range of people who surf, but also the wide spectrum of interests those people have.”

The surf magazine decicated to New York surfers.

Yun, Klauck and Brown have all previously worked on projects that garnered attention in both the arts and media worlds. Klauck’s collaborative book project, IFS, LTD, was featured at the NY Art Book Fair, and in publications like Graphic Magazine, It’s Nice That, and Playground. It is currently held in the collection at PS1 MoMA. Yun has art directed publications and campaigns for The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, PS 1 MoMa’s “Pole Dance” by SO-IL, Italian furniture company Arper, Nike, New York City Opera, Ford Foundation and other institutions at the graphic design studio 2×4. Ms. Brown played a critical role in launching the tattoo and men’s lifestyle magazine Inked and has written for prominent websites like Babble.com and YourTango.
