Steamer Lane crew in SBIF

Surfing’s iconic Steamers Lane Crew is set to appear for the Santa Barbara International Film Festival screening of Directors Joshua Pomer The Westsiders. Over 5,000 films were submitted to this prestigious Festival and the historic story of the Santa Cruz Westside has been chosen to participate as a part of the actions sports “To The Maxx” program.


Many of the film’s stars and other of surfing’s notable are set to appear at the screening and make this a night to remember. The Santa Cruz Westsiders Daryl “Flea” Virostko, Shawn “Barney” Barron, and Jason “Ratboy” Collins and Vince Collier are set to make the trip from Santa Cruz for the Festival. Also scheduled to appear Actress Rosanna Arquette, Big Wave Surfer Peter Mel, Skater Jay Adams, Actor Rob Lowe, 10 Time World Champion Kelly Slater, and Hawaii FiveO Actor Scott Collins.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival is now its 26th years and considered to be in the top ten Film Festivals in the US. The 2011 SBIFF will be taking place January 27 through February 6th at many locations throughout this charming beachside town. The majestic Arlington Theater will be the venue for this SB Premiere of Josh’s newest film. Located at 1317 State Street, the Arlington is right in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara, California, the film is set to screen on Friday, February 4th at 7:30 pm. Ticket passes maybe purchase on line at www.sbiff.org or at the Festival Ticket Kiosk at the Arlington Theater, starting on January 17th. Individual tickets will be available on the day of the show at the Arlington Theater.

Surf City Santa Cruz, California is the setting for this story of best friends Daryl “Flea” Virostko, Shawn “Barney” Barron, and Jason “Ratboy” Collins bonded by common tragedy and their love of surfing. Their young lives were at times tainted with shattered homes, drug addiction, other psychological issues and hard-core localism. The home break was the desirable Steamer Lane, but they had to join ‘The Westsiders’ Surf Tribe in order to surf there. They were guided by Vince Collier, who was known as “The Godfather of The Westside”. Vince, a massive brute force, ran Steamer Lane with his own version of street justice for surfers and drove the surfing capabilities of these young surfers to excel in their passion.

Narrated by Rosanna Arquette directed by Joshua Pomer and Produced by Brian Hirel and Michael De Nicola. The Westsiders has received many accolades to date including recently a highly coveted nomination at the 2010 Surfer Poll Awards. Pomer studied film at University of California at Santa Barbara and received a degree in Film Studies. Josh has worked diligently on this film and his name is becoming well known within the industry for his filmmaking talent. This is a highlight to be able to screen to his home town this multi award winning film at this respected and admired Festival. This screening will be a Premiere to Pomer’s hometown.
