Surfers for Cetaceans, co-founded by pro free surfer Dave Rastovich and eco-warrior Howie Cooke, are hosting the UK premiere of their highly-anticipated Minds in the Water film on Jersey.

The film documents Rasta’s five-year journey from apathetic pro to respected ocean activist, and features epic surf footage alongside a vital environmental message. S4C members will host a live Q&A session after the screening.

The premiere takes place on July 14th, the final day of the International Whaling Commission’s controversial annual conference, also being held on Jersey. The S4C event rounds up the first International Whale Celebration, a week of positive, cultural events to highlight the beauty of whales and raise awareness about their ongoing plight at the hands of whaling nations, navy sonar and pollution.

International Whale Celebration is organised by Women for Whales, a conscious collective of female surfers, artists, writers and yogis, including Natalie Fox, ambassador for Roxy and Soul Surfer Foundation.

Women for Whales are uniting with grassroots groups, international NGOs and the local community to focus on education, awareness and a positive, creative approach to ocean activism,” said Natalie. “The S4C crew always have a presence at the International Whaling Commission meeting and we’re stoked that they’re coming to Jersey to be part of the Whale Celebration, and of course sample the island’s waves.

As surfers and ocean lovers it is time to work together, step up and make a stand for our oceans. For us it is our playground, our sanctity and sanctuary, but for the whales and dolphins it is their home.

Other events during Whale Celebration week include a surf day at St Ouen’s beach, a Whale Trail of cetacean art, film screenings, and benefit gigs.

Surfers who can’t make it to Jersey for the event are being encouraged to hold their own paddle out ceremonies for the whales over the weekend of the 9th – 10th July.

Tickets for the MITW screening on July 14th cost £15/£12 and are available from 1st June 2011, through Jersey Arts Centre: Phillips Street, Jersey, St Helier, JE2 4SW 01534 700 400 www.artscentre.je
