Pine Ridge is an Indian Reservation in South Dakota and is among the poorest counties in the USA. The reservation is the site of several tragic milestones in the history between the Sioux and the US government and it is evident that century old bloodshed still has ripple effects on today’s society.
Skateboarding in Pine Ridge chronicles a skatepark build and the life of the Lakota youth. Thanks to the work of the Stronghold Society, an organisation dedicated to empowering youth, the youngsters have found a focus and have something to look forward to.

“There’s a lot of struggles, these kids go through a lot of things on a daily basis and I think the idea of having this thing that is theirs – skateboarding – they take ownership of it. It gives them hope and it plants a seed of something bigger for them.”
Walt Pourier, from the Stronghold Society said about the project.
“The goal is to connect the youth through these skateparks, by doing that we are connecting these communities that aren’t always connected”.
