Yeah I know this report is late, but…well… Kalani David is actually an amazing cocktail maker and I had to make the most of it.
There are a lot of grand phrases being used to describe the weekend’s Red Bull Unleashed Contest; ‘ground-breaking’, ‘game-changing’ ‘history-making’. It’s all pretty huge.
And rightly so, because it was a first in many ways… hence why we’ve repeated them all here.
Over 2000 people descended into Wales’ Conwy Valley last weekend to watch 24 of the World’s best surfers battle it out in Surf Snowdonia’s wave garden, for the title of 2015 Red Bull Unleashed Champion.
Unleashed was the first surf contest to ever be held on an artificial wave and if it had a point to prove, it proved it: This wave-garden in the centre of a Welsh mountain valley is more than 10 miles from the coast and can still host a pretty sick surf contest.
With waves created by the push of a button, nothing was conventional and yet it had everything a surf competition should have
With waves created by the push of a button, nothing was conventional and yet it had everything a surf competition should have. There were surfers, and reliable head-height waves that they didn’t have to wait for. There were spectators dressed in ridiculous costumes, screens at each end of the pool that played live feeds and replays of each wave and commentators that the surfers could actually hear in the water, because they were literally 10ft away. There was even a playlist. But perhaps most surprisingly, there was enough sunshine for Luke Davis and his famous technicolor hair to free-surf without a wetsuit.
The toss of a coin decided who would surf first in the heats, and they each got five waves on which to stomp their authority. For the first time, people could watch from a pier in the centre of the lagoon as well as from the sides. There were no chances to fall.
So what do you do with all that pressure? Well Albee Layer thrived and channelled his energy into becoming the first ever Red Bull Unleashed Champion after a valiant final against Billy Stairmand.
Then you party, and Kalani David makes you a bunch of cocktails called the Nightcrawler.
Cue the unleashed.
Kalani’s Night-crawler recipe:
- 2 shots of spiced rum
- 1 can of Tropical Red Bull
- 1 dash of white wine
Floater: Don’t underestimate the debilitating skills of Kalani David to cook up some Red Bull and rum combinations.
