Santiago Videla shares some out-of-season photos and reflects on the city of Santa Catarina in Winter.

The summer is gone. No doubt about it. The beach becomes empty, and the parking lots too. The neighborhood and the schools are jammed untill the end of the year. But the surfers remain here, even after the XXL Super Pro surf sponsded contests have gone, they keep surfing. This is best time to be here , everyone has so much style, and there are no macho figures hogging the waves. Most of these surfers are fishermen, common workers or retired people. But when Neptune calls in Brasil, you just go.

In the south of Brasil, Joaquinha and Mole are the most well-known and surfed spots, but at Praia do Rosa things are very diferent. When I talk to the locals and the surf shop owners they tell me about how the times are changing. They exchange opinions about how the winter surfers try to keep the surf as accessible as possible, and how we should avoid the localism and aggressive mentality of some other spots. The local surfers believe you can’t fight the sea, and you can’t beat the ocean, so try to ride waves, not to fight waves.

These people wait patiently until the summer is over to enjoy the peace of each wave. Less tourist and surfers means less income for these guys too, but when you have the gift of the ocean at your front door, it really doesn’t matter. I love this time in Brasil, it’s farmore appealing to me. If it appeals to you too, then spread the voice.
